Book Expo America 2003
Rochon Perry launched her new publishing company, Cedar Grove, with able help from Laurel Carpenter and kibbitzer Jackie. Rochon plans to publish multicultural graphic novels for all age groups.
Batton signed lots of Supernatural Law #34’s ("Mr. Negativity") at the PMA booth as samples for the upcoming trade paperback collection.
Exhibit A had a booth to itself on BEA Sunday when Cedar Grove’s neighbors had to vacate, leaving their furniture behind! By the usual serendipity at BEA, Exhibit A’s book printer, Malloy, had a booth directly across the aisle from PMA’s, and Batton was able to visit with our sales rep, Bill Ralph (also a comics fan!).
Jackie hadn’t seen cartoonist Leslie Cabarga in over 20 years. Leslie wrote The Fleischer Story and drew Betty Boop for licensed products for many years. He’s now designing fonts.

At right, Diamond held numerous creator signings at its booth, including one with Blue Monday’s Chynna Clugston-Major.
Writer Paul Dini was on hand to promote JLA: Secret Origins at the DC booth.
The lines were long for Colleen Doran at both the Diamond and DC booths. DC ran out of copies of her new graphic novel, Orbiter, written by Warren Ellis.

At right, Batton ran into artist extraordinaire Brad Rader in the aisleways. Brad’s style can be seen in some recent issues of DC’s Cat Woman. Brad did the cool pinup in Supernatural Law #25.
Above, Calvin Reed, the news editor for Publisher’s Weekly, served as moderator of several graphic novel panels at BEA and has been a driving force behind getting more coverage of gn’s in PW.

At left, also at the Diamond Booth was Brett Warnock of Top Shelf, an indie publisher putting out some of the most interesting graphic novels on the shelves today, from Rich Koslowski’s Three Fingers to Doug TenNapel’s Creature Tech.
Free Comic Book Day 2003
On May 3rd Batton spent Free Comic Book Day at Comics n Stuff in San Diego’s North County Fair shopping center.

Comics n Stuff’s manager Billy Martinez (above) is also a great cartoonist whose work includes Wildflower and Kick Ass Girl.
John Romita Jr., the wildly popular artist on Marvel’s flagship title, Amazing Spider-Man, shared a signing table with Batton on Free Comic Book Day.
