Once again, Batton was a featured guest at Atlantis Fantasyworld’s pre-APE signing in Santa Cruz. The other guests were Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise) and Tom Beland (pictured) of the Eisner-nominated series True Story, Swear to God. On the left is the lovely Lily, the "star" of Tom’s autobiographical series

At left, APE moved into its gigantic new facility, the Concourse. This view shows the main exhibit hall from the front entrance; a second exhibit hall is up the steps to the left.

Jason Little looked spiffy at the display for his graphic novel Shutterbug Follies, published by Doubleday.

Steve Lafler, cartoonist of Baja ("a jazz-noir picture novel"), featuring his Bughouse characters, showed off his lookalike son, Max.

Shannon Wheeler, of Too Much Coffee Man fame, who contributed a pinup to Supernatural Law #35.

Batton hobnobbed with a wide variety of cartoonists at APE, including:

Eric Shanower, award-winning writer/artist of Age of Bronze, published by Image, plus his own wonderful adaptations of the Oz books.

Lark Pien, talented minicomics creator whose Long Tail Kitty books are utterly charming.

Donna Barr, creator of "drawn books" The Desert Peach and Stinz.

Newcomer Bernyce Talley, whose self-published Le’ Menagerie shows promise of being an interesting series, in which a young scientist becomes merged with a lion.

Jason Little, whose Shutterbug Follies is collected from his ongoing online strip, Bee.

Steve Lieber, artist on the award-winning Whiteout from Oni and Eisner-nominated story "Me and Edith Head."

Above, Batton also took out time to chat with comics historian Ana Merino at the Fantagraphics booth.

Above left, Rick Geary, cartoonist extraordinaire of Victorian mystery graphic novels published by NBM (here with wife Deborah).

Left, Jackie with Judd Winick, prolific writer and artist whose works include Barry Ween, Boy Genius for Oni and the graphic novel Pedro and Me as well as a popular writing gig on DC’s Green Lantern.

Below left, Jackie schmoozed with legendary artist Robert Williams, a special guest at this year’s APE. Robert was signing is new book, Hysteria in Remission, at the Fantagraphics booth.

Below right, Meanwhile, Jackie hung out with Keith Knight, whose popular strip The K-Chronicles can be found on Salon.com and in several book collections.

At the "dead dog" party, Batton got to chat with Andrew Farago of the Cartoon Art Museum and cartoonist Shaenon Garrity, whose daily online strip "Narbonic" is now available at moderntales.com.
