|SPX/The Expo 2002
|Batton greeted attendees as they made their way through the crowded aisle in front of the Exhibit A booth.
|Exhibit As next-door neighbor in the classy Versailles Room at the Bethesda Holiday Inn was Steve Conley, cartoonist of the popular online (and Image print version) strip Astounding Space Thrills. Steve also designs the comicon.com website in his spare time!|
|Speaking of comicon.com, Jen Contino, crack reporter for The Pulse, stopped by the booth numerous times, usually to drop off copies of cool books and to introduce us to other cartoonists.
|SPX director Greg McElhatton seemed surprisingly relaxed throughout the weekend.
At left, Batton also hobnobbed with such other exhibitors as Bob the Angry Flower. For more exhibitors and cartoonists, click here.
After the Ignatz Awards ceremony, Batton and Jackie fraternized with such luminaries as:
|Finders Carla Speed McNeil.|
|Eisner Award winner Evan Dorkin.|
|John (Buzzboy) Gallagher and Marc (Naked Brain) Hempel (Thanks for the ride to the park, John!).|
|Love and Rockets Jaime Hernandez (cover artist for this Decembers Mavis #4!).|
|Above, Megan Kelso (right), winner of two Ignatzes, for her minicomic series Artichoke Tales from Highwater.
At right, James Kochalka, another Ignatz winner, for The Sketchbook Diaries.
|Norwegian cartoonist Jason (Hey, Wait . . . and Shhh, published by Fantagraphics) and Ignatz winner James Sturm (The Golems Mighty Swing).
The Holiday Inn bar was a great place for schmoozing after hours.
|Batton and Jackie had a great time talking in the wee hours with John and Sandra of Metaphrog, the writer/artist team (from Scotland and France) behind the charming (and scary) Louis series of books.|
|Batton with the SPX guest of honor art spiegelman and writer/artist Phoebe Gloeckner, whose new book Diary of a Teenage Girl is due out in November from Frog Ltd.|
|Children of Chaykin: Batton, Peter Kuper, and Dean Haspiel have a common bond: they were all assistants for Howard Chaykin at some point early in their careers.|
|Its always a party when Bryan Talbots around!
|Special guest Frank Miller gets tough with Battonbut its all in fun!|
