SPX the Expo
Oc1 1-3
Mitch Berger, Esq., who has been Batton’s legal consultant on Supernatural Law for the past 10 years, dropped by to say hello.
Jackie and Batton enjoyed being next to Bosch Fawstin (and girlfriend Meagan Parker) for the whole weekend. We’ve been recommending Bosch’s graphic novel Table for One since we first saw it last year.
Mike Mignola, of Hellboy fame, was the featured guest at SPX and helped raised tons of money for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. SPX has always served as a fund-raiser for the CBLDF.
On the other side of the Exhibit A Booth was the ultracool John (Buzzboy) Gallagher, who published the More Fund and Even More Fund anthologies as CBLDF fundraisers. You’ll find Batton’s classic "A Case for Ygor" (remastered!) in Even More Fund, along with contributions by such illuminaries as Steve Rude, Bill Morrison, Al Milgrom, Frank Cho, Kurt Busiek, Phil Hester, George Perez, and more!
Another popular SPX guest was Eric Powell, writer/artist of The Goon, another humor/horror title (published by Dark Horse).
To honor Exhibit A’s 10th, SPX put the spotlight on Batton for a one-hour panel. He was interviewed by author Tom DeHaven, who wrote the introduction for Mister Negativity, And Other Tales of Supernatural Law.
Award-winning cartoonist Linda Medley (Castle Waiting) has resurfaced after putting her book on hiatus. She is now teaching comics at Savannah College.
It’s always great to discover new talent at SPX. Here’s Batton with Pat Lewis, nominated for an Ignatz Award for best minicomic with his "Thankless Job."
Some of the exhibitors
Gina Briggs, writer/artist of the Red String mini, among others. Check out her manga-inspired teen comics at Strawberry Comics.
Rick Smith, of Shuck! fame, brought by his two new titles: Baraka and Black Magic in Morocco (published by Alternative) and Temporary: Cubes and Ladders, written by Damon Hurd.
Sam Hiti, writer/arist of the critically acclaimed and definitely demented End Times/Tiempos Finales.
Brian Lee O’Malley, writer/artist of two graphic novels from Oni: Lost at Sea and Scott Pilgrim, vol. 1.
Newcomer Brendan Burford with his nicely produced comic titled—what else? Brendan Comics.
Party people:
Metaphrog (John and Sandra), creators of the charming (if subversive) Louis graphic novels, flank James Kochalka (cartoonist of the Ignatz award-winning online comic American Elf), and Norwegian cartoonist Jason (Hey, Wait and other graphic novels published by Fantagraphics).
Dean Haspiel looks on as Scott Morse sketches. Scott, known for his graphic novels such as Soulwind and The Barefoot Serpent, had hand-produced several limited-editions minis for the show. Scott—where do you get the time?
Carla Speed McNeil’s Finder received the Ignatz Award for Best Continuing Series. Go, Carla!
Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth chatted with Batton about coverage of "the new mainstream" in The Comics Journal.
In addition to Finder, Carla has been busy with her latest issue: little David.
