Lots of celebrities stopped by the Exhibit A booth to say hi, including:

Peter Bagge (of Hate and Buddy Bradley fame)

Greg Bear (best-selling science fiction author)

Kurt Busiek (writer of Dark Horse’s Conan and of course WildStorm’s Kurt Busiek’s Astro City)

Ed Brubaker (writer of DC’s Cat Woman and Gotham Central, among other popular titles)

Gail Simone (writer of DC’s Birds of Prey)

Batton got to meet a number of up-and-coming cartoonists and self-publishers, including:

Tom Doherty, publisher of the full-color Java (Committed Comics).

Young Brandon Steele, creator of Dino Tails and Zan’s Star Quest

And the crew Illusive Productions at the next booth, who’s Dorothy is a full-color fumetti-style retelling of The Wizard of Oz.

James Lloyd, who draws Futurama for Bongo but has also published the minicomic Superstar.

Also on the self-publishing panels was James Taylor (left), whose Rorschach Entertainment puts out such titles as Grave Digger (by Christopher Mills and Rick Burchett) and Days of the Dragon (by Ron Fortier and Gary Kato). The fellow on the right is Big Name Fan Bill Schelly, author of The Golden Age of Comic Fandom and Sense of Wonder: A Life in Comic Fandom.

Batton appeared on a panel on self-publishing with Seattle-area fan favorite cartoonist Phil Foglio, who with wife Kaja publishes the color steam-punk series Girl Genius.

Batton had fun talking to fans like Greg and Julie Hatcher. Greg teaches cartooning to middle-school kids—check out their work at monkeyspit.

Arrrr . . . What’s a comics show without pirates and their "shell phone"? These guys perform as part of the Seattle Seafair Pirates.

We couldn’t have done the show without local fans Rob Salkowitz and Eunice Verstegen. Love those shirts!

And speaking of fans, this Mavis fan is herself a legal secretary!

The guy in charge of the whole shebang was Jim Demonakos, who should be rightly proud of a successful show
