SPX 2005 Bethesda, MD
Around the Exhibit Hall
Batton at the Exhibit A Press table.
Exhibit A’s next-door neighbors, Bosch Fawstin and Meagan Parker. Bosch was nominated for the Eisner Award for Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition for his self-published graphic novel Table for One.
Raina Telgemeier, minicomics and online cartoonist, is now doing the Babysitters Club graphic novels for Scholastic.
Trisha Lynn Sebastian, writer/editor of the anthology Smut Peddler, shows everyone what "small press" is all about: Collate and staple those minicomics!
Jim Ottaviani had one of the hits of the show, Bone Sharps, Cowboys, and Thunder Lizards, which sold out early in the show. Jim was taking orders to fill when he got back home to his GT Labs headquarters in Michigan.
Rich Koslowski, of 3 Geeks and Three Fingers fame, attracted attention with his new Elvis graphic novel, The King.
Newcomer Eric "Von Allan" Julien and wife Sam Boswell set up an attractive display to generate interest in Eric’s upcoming graphic novel, The Road to God Knows. They were handing out cool bookmarks and buttons along with samples from the book.
Jane Irwin (writer/artist of Vogelein) and Paul Sizer (writer/artist of Little White Mouse and Moped Army) were celebrating their first anniversary. They missed last year’s SPX because they were tying the knot!
Schmoozing at SPX
Harvey Pekar was the special guest of honor at SPX 2005. Jackie and Batton had a great chat with him, then Rick Koslowski came along and joined the group.
Bar Con! Here’s Batton with cartoonist Pat Lewis, who does lots of funny cartoony stuff, such as "Office Funnies" and "Matt’s Rabbit," over at Lunchbreak Comics.
Batton LOVES getting pinups for Supernatural Law, so he was delighted when Jennifer Hachigan presented him with her drawing (which will appear in an upcoming issue). Jennifer writes and draws the long-running fantasy series Lore.
Speaking of the Ignatz Awards, this year’s MC was Keith Knight (of Kchronicles fame). If he looks a little out of focus, it’s because he took numerous tequila shots
Andy Runton, writer/artist of the adorable Owly series of graphic novels, won the Ignatz Award for Promising New Talent.
Carla Speed McNeil, winner of Best Continuing Series for Finder for the second year in a row, was whooping it up at the after-party with Batton and Chris "Strange Eggs" Reilly. By the way, the brick is the actual award!
