MoCCA 2004
Puck Building, New York.
Around the MoCCA Booths
Denis Kitchen's six-year-old daughter Alexa was doing sketches and selling two volumes of her cartooning: Alexa Kitchen: The Early Years!
Award-winning "underground" cartoonist Kim Deitch appeared at the Pantheon Press table to autograph his Eisner-nominated Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
Hampered by a virus that gave him a gravely voice, the always funny Evan Dorkin still held forth at the Slave Labor table and managed to make it through the three hours of hosting the Harvey Awards.
The Twenty-Three Skidoo crew: the Belanger Brothers (Brian and Derrick) and Brian's wife, Traci.
Self-publisher Robert Gavila demonstrated that he has good taste in reading material! Look for the first issue of his four-part spy thriller Nisha in July.
Among the superstar artists who did signings at MoCCA's own table were Bill Sienkewicz and Neal Adams.
Joe and Hillary Staton were giving away "dog treats" to go with the Scooby Doo comics Joe draws for DC.
Elena Steier, of Vampire Bed and Breakfast fame, showed off her "Hell-O Kitty" shirt.
The star of MoCCA was Craig Thompson, who won three Harvey awards for Blankets and signed books for long lines of fans at the Top Shelf "bar."
Exhibit A was in Room C, along with a variety of other folks, including Byron Preiss's iBooks, IDW, Dark Horse, Eric Shanower, and Howard Cruse.
Quirky New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast was on hand to receive a special award from MoCCA and to sign copies of her new book, The Party, After You Left.
Cartoonist Jeff Stevens, whose letter and Grim Reaper cartoon appeared in issue 40, stopped by to say hello as well.
Batton and Jackie finally got to meet cartoonist Bosch Fawstin, who recently made a stunning debut on the comics scene with his self-published graphic novel, Table for One (recommended in SLaw #40). Bosch is up for the Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
The Harvey Awards Show at the Museum
Two pages from Supernatural Law #38 (nominated for Best Single Issue) were on display at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. During a pre Art Festival reception, Batton hung out with old studiomate Bob Smith. Bob has inked several of the Radioactive Man issues that Batton wrote for Bongo.
The Harvey Awards exhibit included a display of all the nominated books and comics, including Supernatural Law.
The Harvey Awards Banquet
During the Harvey Awards cocktail party, Frank Miller had Batton and Denis Kitchen in stitches. Batton was shocked to find one of his fellow tablemates to be nominee Clem Robins (Best Letterer), as Clem had been the first letterer on the Wolff & Byrd newspaper strip back in 1979, and the two had not encountered each other since!
Dark Horse editor Diana Schutz joined Batton and Liz Glass for some after-awards schmoozing.
Kyle Baker (with wife Elizabeth Glass) received the Harvey Award for Best New Series for Plastic Man.
